The WHO’s 2023 Health Emergency Appeal requests US$2.54 billion.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is today announcing the commencement of its 2023 health emergency appeal for US$2.54 billion to help millions of people worldwide who are experiencing health emergencies. A record 339 million more people need humanitarian aid today than in 2022, a rise of almost a quarter.
The WHO is currently addressing an unprecedented number of intersecting health emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic, measles, cholera, and syphilis outbreaks, as well as climate change-related disasters like flooding in Pakistan and food insecurity in the Sahel and greater Horn of Africa. Additional emergencies include the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the war in Yemen.
The WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated that “this unprecedented convergence of crises deserves an exceptional response.” “More people than ever are at immediate risk of sickness and famine and want assistance right away. The world cannot turn its back on these issues and wait for them to go away. I implore donors to give generously in order to support WHO’s efforts to save lives, stop the spread of illness both within and beyond borders, and aid in the reconstruction of communities.

WHO is currently responding to 54 health emergencies worldwide, 11 of which are categorised as Grade 3 emergencies, the organization’s highest level of emergency, necessitating a response at all three levels. The most defenceless are frequently the hardest hit.
WHO offered a wide range of services in 2022, including medication, other supplies, training for physicians and other healthcare professionals, vaccinations, improved disease surveillance, mobile clinics, mental health support, maternal health consultations, and much more. WHO provides high-impact, low-cost solutions that safeguard people’s health, lives, and means of subsistence. For every dollar invested in WHO, a return on investment of at least US$35 is produced*.
