For the first time in the 25-year history of the Financial Times MBA Ranking, Columbia Business School in New York City has taken the top spot. Its alumni have the third-highest average weighted salary, at $226,359, which contributes to the school’s overall success. According to a survey of alumni’s seniority levels, the university also rose five spots to 15th in the career progression category. “[The] Columbia MBA was totally transformative professionally, personally, and opened a whole new world of opportunities for me,” said one respondent.
Cornell and Johnson rank highest in terms of their alumni networks.
Cornell: Johnson in the United States has the best alumni network, moving it up nine spots to eighth overall. This new section of the 2023 ranking takes into account alumni opinions on the network’s usefulness in areas like career advancement. Best for carbon footprint: Virginia: Darden
The carbon footprint rank was introduced in 2023 to evaluate schools’ efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Darden School of Business, which ties for 17th place overall, dominated this new category. The American university was able to become carbon neutral in part because it guaranteed payments for electricity generated without fossil fuels, which allowed its electricity provider to finance a new solar plant to supply the university. ESCP, a French business school, is the only institution to have gender parity in its most recent MBA class and has therefore risen 25 spots to 27th overall. The Smith School of Business in Canada, which shares its name with the US institution, rose 28 spots to tie for 71st place overall. The graduates of the programme praised the emphasis placed on teaching “soft skills,” such as how to work together and resolve conflicts. According to one survey’s respondent, “due to its small class size, I believe Queen’s has helped me connect with each and every MBA candidate… very well and at a personal level.”

The Isenberg School of Management, at number 69, is the highest-ranking newcomer. The US university’s success can be attributed in part to the fact that its MBA programme offers the best value for money, as determined by a comparison of the average salary of graduates with the amount of money they would have earned had they not gone to graduate school.
